* FOOTNOTE ‘Hang on, hang on,’ you might be thinking. ‘Surely people did this before. I mean, what about all those lovely patterns in medieval manuscripts or Islamic architecture? They don’t represent anything in the real world either.’ You’d be right, of course. As we saw in the opening chapters, non-representational art is probably the oldest form of art. When we talk about Kandinsky as a pioneer, we mean that he initiated the artistic movement that came to be known as Abstract art. He took abstraction beyond the world of mere decoration, and put it onto the walls of art galleries (and not as wallpaper).

* FOOTNOTE Some of Klint’s paintings are crying out for the attentions of conspiracy theorists. The spirals of her Seven-Pointed Star (1908) series, for example, look for all the world like the tracks of charged particles in a bubble chamber – an unimagined technology at the time, which would reach maturity at CERN exactly 20 years after the artist’s death. Other paintings resemble the flight paths or parts of space probes. Just coincidence, of course, but if someone’s looking to commission a sci-fi reboot of The Da Vinci Code , there’s definitely plenty of material here.
